NCC INCREASED DATA PRICE; WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR AN AVERAGE NIGERIAN?

- Rokosu Daniel

Two weeks ago, the National Communication Commission, NCC directed all network providers in Nigeria to increase prices for purchasing data starting from December 1st.

The move which according to the NCC was aimed at paving way for small shareholders in the telecommunication market such as Multilinks and Starcoms to be able to compete with the "big boys" will mean that 1GB data can no longer be bought for #500 but at least #2000 and vice versa

In a nation like Nigeria which boast of the largest telecommunication market in Africa yet with little rate of free internet access, the move is definitely a wrong step in the wrong direction.
And the present economic recession will only make matter worse. For the average Nigerian student that depend on the Internet for most of their researches and school work, it means more spending for them, for the bloggers, it means less traffic as most people won't bother to waste their "precious data" visiting blogs.
The social media freaks will also be affected. We trust our internet geeks to come up with a new and better browsing cheat very soon but not every Nigerian will be able to access it or even try to use it(like the "holy ones").

Indeed the NCC new directive will surely spell doom for the numerous internet dependent citizens of the nation!.
