THE CONDITIONS BEHIND ASUU STRIKE SUSPENSION
Late last night,the Academic staff union of universities announced a "conditional suspension" of its over one month old strike and directed all members to resume work immediately today. However, Nigerian students shouldn't jubilate yet.
ASUU national president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi told newsmen after the meeting with the federal government that the Union decided to suspend the strike till the end of October after a Memorandum of Action (MoA) was signed by the two parties.
According to the president, ASUU won't hesitate to take action should the FG go back on their promise to the union.
ASUU are demanding for the implementation of the 2009 agreement, 2013 Memorandum of understanding and the 2016 resolutions it has reached with the Federal government. Other demands include funding for the revitalization of universities, payment of earned academic allowance and exemption of universities from the treasury single account.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Olabisi Onabanjo University will likely resume for the 2017/2018 academic session in the early weeks of October.
