LAW STUDENTS SOCIETY ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVES

Samson Stephen

The Law student governing body of Olabisi Onabanjo University, LSS held its election today being Wednesday, 25th January, 2017 at the premises of the law lecture theatre, Faculty Of Law, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

It was noted that the members of the Electoral Committee of the above stated faculty were on ground at 9am getting ready for the long anticipated election which was scheduled to hold between the hours of 11:00am & 2:00pm, after the last election which was annulled, this time the newly appointed Electoral Committee members  were mindful and very observant towards achieving the goal of  a free and fair election and protecting their individual integrity and that of the faculty at large.

Accreditation alongside voting started at 11:00am (GMT+1) with 700 ballot papers, six (6) ballot boxes (4 labeled “Executives” & 2 labeled “LSPC”), each placed at a distance of about 2feet away from another and six (6) Electoral accreditation stands ( 5 labeled according the 5years of study levels in the Faculty, respectively and a stand labeled “DIPLOMA I & II”), 4 election observers, 5 security agents/men were present and the Chief Security Officer, Mr. Adekunle who later came to check on the proceedings of the ongoing election exercise and for sure the electorates (the ever ready Law Student Community).

Students from various levels were present and ready to exercise their voting rights in compliance with the ECO guidelines; only students from “LAW DIPLOMA II” weren’t allowed to vote reason being that, the ECO never got the “LAW DIPLOMA II” list.

At 2:00pm the voting process was brought to a close and it was time for the post-voting activities, Mrs Kolawole ( a Faculty of Law lecturer and an official in the LSS Election) directed these processes with an intent of transparency.

Firstly, the unused ballot papers were counted 198 then the used ballot papers counted 502, then sorting began at 2:18pm & ended 2:53pm, then Mrs.

Kolawole and The LSS ECO counted the votes as the electorates, the party agent to each candidate/contestant witnessed alongside the electoral observers, although at various points the security agents instructed the electorates to step few meters away to avoid breaking of the ECO Electoral rules thereby hindering the goal of a free and fair election, this was done as a security measure, then the results were announced and was unopposed by all parties involved.

According to few who spoke about this exercise, they classified it as the most credible, free and fair election of the faculty so far, opponents congratulated one another as large number of the electorates celebrated their victory as the election was ended at 5:48pm, then the ECO alongside the security agents cleared the area and it was called a day.
As observed by me, the LAW STUDENT SOCIETY election as co-ordinated by the LAW STUDENT SOCIETY ELECTORAL COMMITTEE (LSS-ECO) as held on this day the 25th of January,2017 is a “FREE, FAIR AND CREDIBLE” election.
